چکیده

Dear Editor, The management of penetrating neck wound remains controversial. The complicated anatomy of the neck has always made this management challenging. Airway, spinal cord and great vessels are the most important structures to be concerned with. In the presence of cervical spine fracture, airway must be handled with greater care and neck manipulation should be minimised so as to avoid further damage to the injured structures.

Positive Outcome After a Small-Caliber Gunshot Fracture of the Upper Cervical Spine without Neurovascular Damage

BACKGROUND Gunshot wounds to the cervical spine most frequently concur with serious injuries to the spinal cord and cervical vessels and often have a fatal outcome. CASE REPORT We describe the case of a 35-year-old male with a complex fracture of the C2 vertebra body and a mandibular fracture after a penetration gunshot to the cervical spine. Computed tomography (CT) at admission revealed the...

Severe upper airway obstruction due to delayed retropharyngeal hematoma formation following blunt cervical trauma

BACKGROUND We report a case of severe upper airway obstruction due to a retropharyngeal hematoma that presented nearly one day after a precipitating traumatic injury. Retropharyngeal hematomas are rare, but may cause life-threatening airway compromise. CASE PRESENTATION A 50 year-old man developed severe dyspnea with oropharyngeal airway compression due to retropharyngeal hematoma 20 hours af...

Gunshot Injury to the Anterior Arch of Atlas

Penetrating injuries to the upper cervical spine resulting from gunshots are rare in South Korea due to restrictions of gun use. Moreover, gunshot wounds to the upper cervical spine without neurological deficits occur infrequently because of the anatomic location and surrounding essential structures. We present an uncommon case involving the surgical removal of a bullet located in the anterior ...

[Negative-pressure pulmonary edema and hemorrhage associated with upper airway obstruction].

Negative-pressure pulmonary edema accompanied by hemorrhage as a manifestation of upper airway obstruction is an uncommon problem that is potentially life-threatening. The principal pathophysiological mechanism involved is the generation of markedly negative intrathoracic pressure, which leads to an increase in pulmonary vascular volume and pulmonary capillary transmural pressure, creating a ri...
